A Wall Light That Can Face Either Way

This Upton wall light pairs a tapered ribbed glass shade with a simple curved arm, and it's built so you can fit it facing up or down. Point it upward for a softer wash of light up the wall, or downward for something closer to a reading light. Either way, the ribbing in the glass catches the light nicely from any angle.

Choosing a Finish

The ribbed glass shade is identical across all four finishes, so the choice really comes down to the metal. Antique brass and polished brass both sit on the warmer side, with polished brass the shinier of the two. Nickel brings a cooler, more contemporary tone, while bronze is the darkest and most understated, closer to a deep gunmetal than a classic bronze. Every fitting is hand coloured, so slight variation between pieces is normal.

How It Works

It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 8W LED, not supplied, and is dimmable with a compatible dimmer and bulb. The fitting is wall mounted on a 9cm base, with the arm carrying the wiring through to the shade.

Where It Works Best

At 310mm tall, 110mm wide and projecting 146mm from the wall, it's a good size either side of a bed, along a hallway, or flanking a mirror. It suits a bedroom, dining room, living room, hallway or kitchen equally well.

Fritz Fryer set up in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, in 1982, restoring old lights before it began making its own. That background is why the workshop still hand blows its glass and hand colours its metal fittings today rather than machining them to a uniform finish, so small differences from one wall light to the next are expected, not a defect.
