Clear Glass, Either Way Up

This Upton wall light shows off its E27 bulb through a clear, tapered glass shade, and it's designed to be fitted facing up or down depending on the effect you want. With no colour or texture in the glass to soften it, it reads as a clean, fairly bright fitting rather than a diffused one.

Choosing a Finish

The clear glass shade stays the same whichever metal you pick. Antique brass and polished brass are both warm, with polished brass the more reflective of the two, nickel is the coolest and most contemporary option, and bronze is the darkest, closer to gunmetal than a classic bronze tone. Since each fitting is hand coloured, don't expect two to be perfectly identical.

How It Works

It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 8W LED, not supplied, and is dimmable with a compatible bulb and dimmer. It's fitted on a 9cm wall mount, with the curved arm carrying the wiring up to the shade.

Where It Works Best

At 380mm tall, 150mm wide and projecting 168mm from the wall, it has enough scale to flank a mirror, sit either side of a bed, or line a hallway. It works well in a bedroom, dining room, living room, hallway or kitchen.

Fritz Fryer has been making lights in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, since 1982, having started out restoring old fittings from the UK and Europe.
