An old railroad platform light, scaled down for the front door
The Redding Station small wall lantern is the most compact fitting in the collection, taking its cues from the platform lighting once found at American railroad stations. A single light sits behind a shaped aluminium shade and prismatic glass panel, giving off the same warm, slightly aged glow that made this style of lantern so recognisable, without taking up much space on a narrow wall or porch pillar.
Painted Distressed Bronze finish
Finished in Painted Distressed Bronze, it has a worn, weathered look that suits period and character properties particularly well, though it sits just as comfortably against modern render or brick. The distressed finish is part of the design rather than a flaw, so small variations in tone are normal and add to the aged character.
How it works
This lantern doesn't come with a bulb, so you'll need to add one to your order. The aluminium body and prismatic glass are built to withstand being outside, and the collection carries an IP44 rating, so it copes well with rain and damp air in an exposed spot. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting should be installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Where it works best
Being the smallest wall lantern in the range, it suits tighter spots such as either side of a front door, a porch pillar, or a narrow gap between windows, anywhere a full sized lantern would look oversized. As an IP44 rated fitting it is suited to covered or sheltered outdoor spots such as porches and entrances rather than fully exposed walls.
The story behind Feiss
Elstead Lighting has represented Feiss across the UK and Europe since 2012, converting the American designs, this small Redding Station lantern among them, to 220 to 240V electrical systems. Feiss's own story goes back to 1955 and Murray Feiss's small South Bronx workshop, where imported European porcelain figurines were wired into lamp bases and finished with shades his mother, Rose, sewed by hand. Grown over three generations into a family run business, it became one of America's best known decorative lighting names, spanning chandeliers, pendants, wall lights and outdoor fittings, and now sits within Visual Comfort & Co. Redding Station takes its name and look directly from the platform lanterns of old American railroad stations, scaled down here into a small wall lantern for tighter spots.
