The Merrill 2 light flush mount takes a straightforward geometric form, a neat drum shape sitting close to the ceiling, and finishes it with clear seeded glass that catches and scatters the light. It reads as considerably more modern than a traditional lantern, while still doing the practical job of lighting a porch, covered entrance or outbuilding from above.

Black finish

In Black, the fitting has a crisp, streamlined look that suits contemporary house fronts and outbuildings, as well as more traditional properties looking for something a little less ornate than a classic lantern. The clear seeded glass keeps the light bright without glaring, softened just enough to feel welcoming rather than clinical.

How it works

This fitting does not come with a bulb, so you will need to add one to your order. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician, and that applies especially outdoors, where the fitting needs to be wired and sealed correctly against the weather.

With an IP44 rating, it is built for covered outdoor spots such as porches, entrance canopies and outbuildings rather than fully open positions exposed directly to driving rain. It sits flush to the ceiling, so it also suits lower headroom areas where a projecting lantern would not work.

The story behind Feiss

Shades hand sewn by Rose, mother of Feiss founder Murray Feiss, finished the earliest lamps to come out of his South Bronx workshop in 1955, each one built around an imported European porcelain figurine wired into its base. Over three generations, that family business grew into one of America's best known decorative lighting names, its output eventually covering chandeliers, pendants, wall lights and outdoor fittings, with the design heritage now resting within Visual Comfort & Co. Elstead Lighting has represented Feiss across the UK and Europe since 2012, adapting collections including Merrill for 220 to 240V wiring. Merrill itself takes a more modern, geometric approach to outdoor lighting than many of Feiss's period influenced ranges.
