The Chelsea Harbor single chain lantern is built to look like the work lanterns that once lit harboursides through the 1940s and 1950s, hand made from aluminium and hung from an adjustable chain rather than fixed rigidly to a wall or ceiling. The mouth blown, seedy glass gives the light an authentic, slightly imperfect texture that fits the vintage, industrial look the collection is going for.

Storm Cloud grey finish

The Storm Cloud grey finish is applied with a black speckle over aluminium, giving the lantern a weathered, salt worn character straight out of the box rather than a flat, uniform paint job. It suits coastal and industrial styled exteriors particularly well, and pairs naturally with weathered wood, exposed brick and other textured materials.

How it works

The lantern doesn't come with a bulb, so you'll need to add one to your order before hanging it. With an IP23 rating, it's built for outdoor use but only where it has some shelter from direct rain, such as under a porch roof or canopy, rather than somewhere fully exposed to the weather. As with all our outdoor lighting, we'd recommend a qualified electrician handles the installation.

Where it works best

This is designed for covered porches, entranceways and verandas, anywhere the lantern can hang and catch the eye while staying largely out of direct rain. Its IP23 rating means it isn't intended for fully exposed spots like an open garden wall or an unsheltered pergola.

The story behind Feiss

Rose Feiss's hand stitched lampshades were the finishing detail on the earliest Feiss lamps, pieces her son Murray built in 1955 around imported European porcelain figurines wired into lamp bases in a South Bronx workshop. Three generations on, that small workshop had grown into one of America's best known decorative lighting names, its output spanning chandeliers, pendants, wall lights and outdoor fittings, and its heritage today sits within Visual Comfort & Co. Elstead Lighting has represented Feiss across the UK and Europe since 2012, adapting its designs for 220 to 240V electrical systems. Chelsea Harbor looks to a different chapter of American lighting history for its own inspiration, echoing the working harbourside lanterns of 1940s and 1950s America and remade here in aluminium with a Storm Cloud grey finish.
