Will opal glass hide the bulb?
Not completely, but it will soften the view of it. The glass is semi translucent, so you can see the light source but it's diffused rather than obvious.

Does copper ever need special cleaning?
Dusting keeps it fine. If you want to polish it occasionally to maintain brightness, standard brass polish works well, though the natural patina is lovely too.

Is this pendant good for reading over a dining table?
It provides decent downward light, but brightness depends on your chosen bulb. A 12W 15W LED will give comfortable reading light; 9W is softer and more atmospheric.
