A geometric twist on a classic drum

Ziggy starts out looking like a straightforward drum pendant, then reveals itself on a second look. The outer shade is cut clean through with a repeating diamond lattice, so the metal reads as pattern rather than solid surface, and light escapes through every gap rather than staying trapped inside. This medium two light version has enough presence for a dining table or stairwell without the bulk of a full size chandelier.

Lacquered silver finish

The cut steel lattice is coated in a bright, cool lacquered silver, closer to brushed chrome than to a warm pewter, wrapped around a plain opal glass drum that does the actual work of diffusing the light. Against darker wood, white walls or a mostly monochrome scheme it reads as clean and current rather than heritage brass or bronze.

How it works

Two E27 lamps sit inside the glass drum, so the light itself is soft and even rather than a hot, visible point source. The pierced silver trellis around the outside filters a second, fainter geometric pattern onto the ceiling and nearby walls as the light passes through it. Fit dimmable lamps and the whole effect can be turned down for evenings.

Where it works best

The rods let the drop run from 23.5cm up to 117.5cm, or the shade can be fitted without rods for a semi flush finish in a lower room. That range makes Ziggy adaptable: pulled low it suits a dining table, kitchen island or the run of a staircase, while set higher it works as general room lighting in a living room, bedroom or hallway.

A modern turn for a traditional maker

Elstead Lighting is a British decorative lighting group and distributor with roots going back to the Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, still led today by the same Lucas family, and its catalogue leans heavily toward country house chandeliers and lanterns. Ziggy's cut metal, geometric shade is a departure from that look, though the fit and finish sit alongside the rest of the range.

Questions people ask

Can Ziggy be hung close to the ceiling? Yes. The minimum drop with the supplied rods fitted is 23.5cm, and the rods can be left off entirely for a semi flush fit in a lower room.

What bulbs does it take, and are they included? Two E27 lamps, not included. LED lamps are recommended for running cost and heat, and dimmable lamps if you want the fitting to dim.

Will the cut pattern cast shadows on the ceiling? Yes, that is part of the design. The pierced lattice around the opal glass drum lets a secondary diamond pattern of light and shadow spill onto the ceiling and nearby walls as well as lighting the room directly.

Is it a good fit over a dining table or kitchen island? Yes. With the rods extended to their full 117.5cm drop it suits a table or island well, and the same fitting can be raised much higher for use as general room lighting elsewhere in the home.
