A wall lantern with a bit of character
Most wall lanterns just hang there, but the York down light has a decorative scrolled bracket that gives it a bit of presence before you even get to the lantern itself. The whole fitting angles the light down and out from the wall, in the manner of the old coach lamps that used to mark out a house from the street.
Black, with texture in the glass
The bracket, roof and body are all die cast aluminium, finished in a solid black that will not show up scratches or weathering the way a lighter colour might. The four glass panels are hammered rather than smooth, so the light that comes through them is softened and slightly broken up instead of shining out as one bright square.
How it works
It takes a single E27 bulb, sold separately, and will work with dimmable bulbs if you want to turn the light down on a summer evening rather than have it at full strength all night. The lantern shape means the light is thrown mostly downward and to the sides, useful for lighting the ground near a door rather than the sky above it.
Where it works best
This one suits a period or traditional house best, either side of a front door, along a garden wall, or wherever you want a fitting that looks the part switched off as well as lit. The scrolled bracket adds enough detail that it can be the only decoration on an otherwise plain wall.
