A lantern to mark the way in
The York single pedestal lantern takes the shape of a traditional coach lantern and sets it on its own short post, built less for lighting a whole path than for announcing where one begins. Stood either side of a gate or drive, it gives an entrance a clear, lit full stop.
Finished in black
The lantern head, tapered pedestal and square base plate are all cast in diecast aluminium and finished in a flat black, with textured glass panels on all four sides that soften the bulb's glow rather than letting it glare straight out. A small finial tops the pitched roof, echoing the coach lantern shape the York range takes its cue from.
How It Works
The York pedestal takes a single E27 bulb, which isn't included, sitting inside the four glazed panels so the light spreads evenly around the fitting rather than in one direction. Fit a dimmable bulb and it will dim on a compatible switch, though as a permanently wired outdoor fitting it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
It's designed to work well in pairs either side of a driveway, front gate or garden gate, though it holds its own as a single fitting on a low wall or gate pillar too. Because it sits low to the ground rather than up on a full height lamp post, it suits a shorter run of wall or planting where a taller post would look out of scale.

York is one of Elstead Lighting's long running coach lantern designs, and this pedestal version sits alongside wall mounted and post top versions in the same family. Elstead can trace its roots back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and the business remains led by the Lucas family today.
