The Winchfield 4 Light Large Picture Light has the long, low profile of an old library reading lamp, stretched out to wash light evenly along a wide painting or a run of framed prints rather than pooling in the middle. Two independent swivel arms hold the shade clear of the frame, so you can angle it precisely once it's on the wall and can see exactly how the light falls.

Aged brass and matte black

The backplate and curved shade are finished in a flat, deep matte black, while the swivel arms, end caps and finials are dressed in a warm aged brass with a soft, worn in glow rather than a bright polished shine. Together the two tones read as more classic library or study than strictly modern, and sit as comfortably against pale walls as they do against dark panelling or a painted picture rail.

How it works

Four E14 lamp holders run along the underside of the long shade, spreading light across the full 70.3cm width instead of leaving the ends of a large canvas in shadow. The two arms swivel independently of each other, so once the fitting is up you can tilt the shade forward or back until the light lands evenly across the picture rather than glaring off the glass. It's a Class I fitting, so it needs to be earthed, and we'd always recommend a qualified electrician handles the installation.

Where it works best

It's built for one job: lighting a large painting, a big framed photograph, or a tight cluster of prints that deserves its own light rather than whatever spills over from the room. Living rooms, hallways, staircases and dining rooms with a statement piece on the wall are the obvious homes for it, anywhere a picture is important enough to be seen properly after dark.

Winchfield comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose name traces back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led by the same Lucas family today. This aged brass and matte black finish sits alongside an aged brass and oak effect version and a polished nickel and white marble effect version of the same design, so the picture light can be matched to the frame or the room rather than the other way round.
