Most picture lights come in one metal, top to bottom. The Winchfield mixes it up: a slim, half round shade in a soft matte black, held on aged brass arms that swing out from a matching black backplate. It gives the fitting more presence than a plain brass version, without tipping into anything heavy handed.

The finish

The shade and wall plate share the same understated black, while the arms, the pivot joints and the little ball feet at each end are all in a warm, slightly antiqued brass. The two tones sit close together rather than fighting, so from a distance it reads as one considered fitting rather than two finishes stuck together.

How it works

Two lamps sit inside the shade and throw light forward and down, which is exactly the angle you want for washing a canvas or a framed print without glare bouncing back at you. The arm pivots at both the wall bracket and the shade itself, so once it is fixed you can still angle the beam to suit the piece underneath.

Where it works best

It was built for artwork, but it works just as well over a mirror, a mantel or a run of shelving where you want a defined pool of light rather than general room glow. The black and brass combination reads well against dark or richly coloured walls in particular.
