The classic version of a familiar shape
If you picture a picture light, this is probably close to what comes to mind: a curved brass shade on a hinged arm, sitting neatly along the top of a frame. The Winchfield does that shape well, with a slightly heavier feeling arm and joint than the very slender antique style versions.
The finish
It comes in aged brass throughout, shade, arm and backplate all in the same warm, softly burnished tone. There is no lacquer sheen to it, more the look of brass that has been handled and lived with, which means it settles into a room rather than announcing itself.
How it works
The two lamps inside are angled to spill light down and forward across whatever sits beneath, and the arm itself moves at two points, at the wall bracket and where it meets the shade, so you can tilt the beam once it is up rather than getting it right by guesswork before fixing.
Where it works best
Obviously suited to lighting a painting or a large framed print, though it also does a good job over a run of bookshelves or a piece of furniture you want picked out. Brass like this tends to sit well against navy, deep green or plain white walls alike.
