A pared back take on the old coach lantern
The Winchester loses the fussy scrollwork you find on most reproduction lanterns and keeps things clean: a square black case, a pitched roof and four small panes of textured glass per side. It reads as period correct without trying too hard about it, which is why it turns up as often outside new builds as it does outside cottages.
Finish
This one comes in black, cast with a slightly grained, almost hammered surface rather than a flat coat, so it catches the light differently depending on the angle you view it from. The glazing bars sit proud of the panes and are picked out in the same black, keeping the whole fitting one consistent tone.
How it works
It is a wall up lantern, so the light throws upward from the fixing point, catching the underside of the roof panel and washing back down through the glass. Fit it with a dimmable bulb and you can take it from a bright welcome light down to something gentler for evenings on the doorstep. The scrolled bracket beneath does the structural work of holding the lantern proud of the wall, echoing the ironwork you would find on a much older building.
Where it works best
Front doors, porches and side passages all suit it, and being rated IP44 it is built to shrug off wind driven rain, so it is equally happy on an exposed gable end. It pairs naturally with brick, render, stone or timber cladding, since the black case does not fight for attention against any of them.
An Elstead staple
Elstead has been making lanterns in this general idiom for decades, drawing on the sort of ironwork you would have seen outside coaching inns and forges. The Winchester is one of the simpler expressions of that, aimed at anyone who wants the character without the ornamentation.
