A coach lantern stripped back to the essentials
The Winchester takes the traditional coach lantern shape, a pitched roof over a square glazed case, and leaves off the scrollwork most reproductions pile on. What is left is a clean, upright silhouette that reads as properly old fashioned without trying too hard, equally at home outside a new build porch or a stone cottage doorway.
Black finish
Cast in black with a slightly grained, almost hammered texture rather than a flat painted coat, the case catches the light differently depending on the angle you view it from. Four small panes of textured glass sit in each side, held by glazing bars finished in the same black, so the whole fitting reads as one consistent tone rather than a mix of materials.
How It Works
Winchester is a wall up light, so it throws its beam upward from the point where it meets the wall, catching the underside of the pitched roof and washing the light back down through the glass panes. It takes a single E27 LED lamp, not included, and pairing it with a dimmable bulb lets you run the light anywhere from a bright welcome glow to something gentler for evenings on the doorstep. A scrolled bracket beneath the case does the structural work of holding the lantern proud of the wall.
Where It Works Best
Front doors, porches and side passages all suit the Winchester, and being rated IP44 it is built to cope with wind driven rain, so it holds up equally well on an exposed gable end or a sheltered porch. The black case sits comfortably against brick, render, stone or timber cladding, since it does not compete for attention with any of them.
Elstead Lighting
Winchester comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose roots trace back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led by the Lucas family today.
