A porch lantern that keeps its head down

The Winchester Single Porch Lantern is the ceiling mounted member of the Winchester family, held on a short black stem straight from a round ceiling rose rather than swung from a chain or projected from a wall bracket. It keeps the same square lantern head and cross barred glazing as the rest of the range, just pulled in close to the ceiling for porches that cannot spare the headroom.

The lantern head, pyramid roof and ceiling rose are all cast in black aluminium with a fine textured finish rather than a flat gloss black, so it reads as ironwork under porch light rather than plastic. Four panels of textured, rippled glass, each divided by a black cross bar, wrap the light source on every side and give the beam a soft, broken look rather than a hard glare.

How It Works

One E27 lamp holder sits inside the lantern head, wired up through the short ceiling stem to the round ceiling rose. It is a Class I fitting, which means it relies on a genuine earth connection through the mains wiring rather than double insulation, so it should always be connected up by a qualified electrician. No bulb is supplied, which leaves you free to fit an E27 LED lamp in the warmth and output you want.

Where It Works Best

Its low, ceiling mounted profile makes it a practical choice for porches, canopies and covered entrances where there is not enough drop for a chain hung lantern, while the black finish and cross barred glazing keep it looking the part on a period or traditional fronted house.

Is the Winchester Porch Lantern suitable for outdoor use? Yes. It is rated IP43 and designed as an outdoor porch fitting, though like any outdoor light it is best sited under some cover, such as a porch canopy, rather than in direct driving rain.

Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 lamp holder and the bulb is not supplied, so you can choose an E27 LED lamp in the colour temperature and brightness you prefer.

Do I need an electrician to install this lantern? Yes. It is a Class I fitting wired through a ceiling rose, which needs a genuine earth connection, so we always recommend a qualified electrician installs it.

Is the Winchester Porch Lantern dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A non dimmable bulb will not dim even on a dimmer switch circuit.
