There is something reassuring about a lantern with proper corners and a stepped, chimney like top. The St Martins takes its cue from lanterns fitted outside pre Georgian houses, boxy and upright rather than curved, and it wears that shape well by a front door or along a boundary wall.
Aged brass finish
This version is finished in aged brass, a warmer, slightly shadowed tone rather than a bright polished shine. The metal box frame holds four panes of frosted glass, so the single bulb glows softly rather than glaring, and the brass will develop its own gentle patina as the seasons pass.
How it works
One E27 bulb sits centrally behind the glass, held on a small bracket you can see through the front pane. It is wired for Class I use, so it needs an earthed connection, and can be dimmed if you choose dimmable bulbs.
Where it works best
Designed for exterior use, it suits porches, side entrances and gateways particularly well, anywhere a single steady light is more useful than a wide spread. The stepped brass top and glazed sides mean it also reads nicely as a period detail even before it is switched on.
Part of a wider range
The St Martins belongs to Elstead Lighting's Olde England collection, a range built around traditional English lantern shapes rather than continental or coastal styling. Elstead has been designing this sort of fitting from its base in Alton, Hampshire since 1971.

- Frosted glass panels on all four sides
- Class I, requires earthing
