Verdigris is the soft blue green coating that copper and brass develop naturally after years of weather, and Elstead finishes this Somerton lantern in that same tone from day one, rather than leaving it to happen on the wall over time.

Aged brass and glass

Underneath the colour, Somerton is solid brass throughout: the swan neck arm, circular backplate and broad domed shade all carry the same chalky green wash. The finish sits over every curve and seam, so the lantern reads as weathered from every angle rather than just on its most visible face.

How It Works

A single E27 bulb sits inside a sealed glass jar beneath the wide metal brim, so the shade throws light out and down while keeping the bulb sheltered from rain running off the roof of the fitting. Fit a dimmable LED and the lantern will work with a dimmer switch; the bulb itself isn't included.

Where It Works Best

The green finish sits particularly well against white render, pale stone or weathered timber, which is where a coastal or garden setting tends to show it off best. Use it to flank a front door, mark the turn of a path, or light a gate from either side, anywhere a fitting needs to look settled into its surroundings rather than freshly installed.

Elstead Lighting

Somerton comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose roots trace back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led by the Lucas family today. The same swan neck arm and broad shade appear elsewhere in the range in a plain aged brass finish, with this verdigris version giving the identical design a cooler, more weathered read.
