A lantern built from hundreds of tiny holes

Saturne breaks away from the traditional lantern shapes elsewhere in the Elstead range. There is no glass panelling and no ornament, just a flat grey canopy sitting over a perforated steel drum, with light escaping through hundreds of small punched holes rather than a single pane of glass. The effect is closer to a piece of industrial equipment than a period lantern, which is exactly the point.

Grey and silver finish

The canopy, neck and wall arm are all finished in the same flat charcoal grey, so the fitting reads as one continuous shape rather than a shade bolted onto a separate bracket. Against that dark body, the perforated drum is left in a brighter silver tone, giving the eye something to focus on and letting the punched pattern catch whatever light is nearby, day or night.

How It Works

Saturne takes a single E27 bulb, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact colour temperature and brightness you want. Behind the steel mesh sits a sealed glass diffuser, which is what allows the fitting to carry an IP44 rating despite the open, perforated shade, and it is this glass that keeps rain and damp off the bulb and holder. Fit a dimmable E27 lamp and Saturne will dim on a compatible switch. Wiring is Class I, so the fitting must be earthed, and we recommend installation by a registered electrician.

Where It Works Best

The perforated drum throws light in a dappled, broken pattern rather than a flat beam, which suits porches, garden walls and entrances where a modern, slightly industrial look outdoors is wanted over a traditional coach lantern. Its plain shape and grey finish also make it easy to repeat several along a wall or facade, since there is no ornate detailing to create an obvious repeat pattern when several are mounted in a row.
