A pendant that answers to a pulley

Set into a compact ceiling rose, a pulley wheel and cast counterweight let this Provence pendant rise toward the ceiling or drop low over a table, all by hand, with no wiring or tools involved. The cone shade beneath is cast in a bright polished nickel, catching the room around it rather than sitting as a dull fixed point overhead.

The finish is bright and close to mirror like, so the cone shade, ceiling rose, counterweight housing and every knuckle joint pick up the colours and light around them rather than absorbing it. Underneath the plating, mild steel gives the shade and fittings the weight needed to hold their position once the cord is set.

How it works

Loosen the cord and the cone shade glides down on its pulley, pull it back up and the counterweight takes the strain, so the same fitting can sit close over a worktop for cooking or lift clear when the surface is needed for something else. It holds one E27 lamp holder, and because the fitting itself carries no dimmer, dimming only works if the bulb fitted is a dimmable one.

Where it works best

Hang two or three side by side above a kitchen island or breakfast bar and use the rise and fall action to bring the light down close over the worktop, then lift it clear when the space is needed for something else. It works just as well over a dining table, where the height can change from a low, intimate setting for dinner to a higher position once the table is cleared.

Questions People Ask

How far can the Provence pendant be raised or lowered? The pulley and counterweight give an adjustable drop from 96cm at its highest to 180cm at its lowest, measured from the ceiling rose to the base of the shade, so it can be set close over a worktop or lowered further for a table.

Does the Provence pendant come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 lamp holder suited to an LED bulb, but no bulb is included, so choose a dimmable one if you want it to work with a dimmer switch.

Is the Provence pendant dimmable? Yes, as long as it's fitted with a dimmable bulb. A bulb that isn't dimmable won't respond to a dimmer switch even on a dimmable circuit.
