Some frames deserve their own light rather than sharing whatever falls from the ceiling. This compact single picture light from Elstead sits above the artwork on a curved arm and throws a controlled line of light down across it.

Polished Brass is the shiniest option in the range, a bright, mirror like gold that picks up reflections from the room around it. It suits gilt frames and traditional interiors especially well, and the square wall plate has a crisp fan pattern pressed into the metal.

How it works

One bulb sits inside the cylindrical shade, lighting downward along its length rather than out into the room. The arm carries a wire wrapped section and an adjustable knuckle joint fixed with a small wing nut, so the angle can be set precisely once it is fitted and left there.

Where it works best

Living rooms, dining rooms and hallways with framed art or an ornate mirror are the obvious homes for it, though it also works well over a bookcase or a favourite piece in a home office.
