The Philadelphia Small is Elstead's tall scroll bracket lantern scaled down to suit a narrower porch, a smaller door or a tighter gap between windows. It keeps every detail of the bigger sizes, the sweeping scroll arm, the urn shaped shade, the shell and leaf castings, just in a footprint that won't overwhelm a modest frontage.

Old bronze, cast into every detail

The finish is a deep old bronze that reads almost black in shadow and warms to a coppery glow wherever the light catches an edge. The shells, leaves and scrollwork are cast straight into the metal rather than applied afterward, so the detail holds up close as well as from the street. It sits comfortably against stone, render or timber, and pairs naturally with brass or iron door furniture nearby.

How It Works

A single E27 bulb sits behind gently rippled amber glass. The fitting is designed for an LED bulb, which you supply yourself, so you can choose the exact brightness and warmth for your doorway. The wavy glass texture breaks the light up rather than letting it glare, giving a warm, faintly flickering look that suits the traditional design. Fit a dimmable bulb and it will dim on a compatible switch. This is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earth connection, and we'd always recommend a qualified electrician for any outdoor wiring.

Where It Works Best

Being the smallest size in the Philadelphia range, this one earns its place on cottages, bungalows and terraces where a larger lantern would swamp the door. It works well fitted singly beside a porch, in a pair either side of a doorway, or spaced along a garden wall, and because the light is thrown downward, it stays close to head height rather than disappearing up into the eaves.

Does the Philadelphia Small lantern come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E27 bulb, which isn't included, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature you prefer.

Can I put the Philadelphia Small lantern on a dimmer switch? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A non dimmable bulb won't respond to the dimmer even on a compatible circuit.
