A lantern built for the pier, not the path
The Philadelphia lantern head appears across several fittings in Elstead's American Collection, on tall lamp posts and hanging chains, but here it sits on its own short fluted pedestal rather than a full height post. At 54cm tall it is scaled for the top of a gate pier, brick pillar or low garden wall, close enough to eye level that the scrollwork and glass stay properly visible rather than getting lost overhead.
Old bronze, with the texture to match
The old bronze finish is applied over a cast metal body with a deliberately uneven, aged look rather than a flat paint colour, so the acanthus leaf scrollwork around the crown and the fluted pedestal beneath both pick up light and shadow differently depending on the angle. Inside, the panels are blown amber glass with the slightly dimpled, handmade texture of old fashioned glazing rather than a smooth modern pane.
How It Works
One E27 lamp holder sits inside the lantern body. The bulb itself is not included, so you can choose your own, and a dimmable LED will let the light be brought down on a compatible dimmer switch. The tinted amber glass softens whatever bulb you fit, giving the warm, uneven glow associated with traditional lanterns rather than a crisp white light. Wiring is Class I, so it needs to be properly earthed by whoever installs it.
Where It Works Best
This pedestal version is built for a fixed, permanent spot rather than somewhere you might move later. It suits the top of a gate pier or brick pillar either side of a driveway or front path, or a low garden wall where you want a matched pair marking an entrance. The square base plate bolts straight down, so it is worth confirming exactly where it will sit before fixing it in place. It is IP44 rated, built to cope with being outdoors in all weather.
Elstead Lighting
Elstead is a British based decorative lighting group and distributor whose roots trace back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and the business is still led by the Lucas family today. The American Collection this pedestal belongs to takes its cues from traditional coach lanterns, reworked in cast detail and tinted glass for entrances, driveways and garden boundaries.

Questions People Ask
How is this pedestal lantern fixed in place? It stands on a square cast base plate that bolts permanently down onto a flat surface such as a gate pier, brick pillar or low wall, so it is worth deciding on the final position before installing it.
Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 lamp holder and the bulb is not included, so you can choose a dimmable LED if you want to use it with a dimmer switch.
Is the Philadelphia pedestal dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable bulb. A standard bulb that is not dimmable will not dim even on a dimmer circuit.
Is this pedestal suitable for outdoor installation? Yes. It is IP44 rated and built as an exterior fitting for gate piers, pillars and garden walls.
