A lantern that hangs instead of stands

The Philadelphia Single Medium Chain Lantern carries the same ornate old bronze detailing as Elstead's post and wall mounted versions, but built to hang from a chain rather than sit on top of a pillar or fix to a bracket. Scrolled acanthus brackets and a pointed finial frame a rounded glass body, giving it the look of a traditional carriage lantern brought down from a coach house doorway.

Old bronze finish and blown glass

The cast metal body is finished in a deep old bronze, with the raised scrollwork and shell motifs picked out in a lighter, worn tone so the detailing stands out rather than disappearing into a flat colour. Behind it, four panels of blown amber glass sit slightly uneven and puckered, the texture you get from hand blown glass rather than a moulded sheet, scattering the bulb's light into a warm, flickering glow.

How It Works

One E27 LED bulb sits inside the lantern, visible through the amber glass from most angles; the bulb itself isn't included. The chain lets you set the drop anywhere between 54cm and 154cm, so the lantern head, which measures 38cm tall and 19cm wide, can sit close under a low porch ceiling or hang further down over a taller entrance. It's rated IP44, so it copes well with rain and damp outdoors.

Where It Works Best

It suits a covered porch, a gate canopy or above a covered entrance, anywhere there's a fixing point overhead to hang it from. The traditional shape and dark bronze finish sit particularly well on an older or period style house, though it works just as happily marking a modern gateway or garden path.
