A lantern that stays close to the wall

The Medstead is a half lantern, its hexagonal shape sliced down the centre so it sits flat against the wall rather than jutting out over a path or doorway. Cast in black, it keeps the look of a traditional coach lantern while taking up only around 14cm of wall space, which is useful wherever room beside a door is tight.

Black finish and detailing

Medstead is finished in black cast steel, with a scalloped crown wrapped around the top of the glass and a pointed finial rising above it. Each of the three visible glass panels is trimmed with the same small decorative curves, echoed in the wavy metal bar that divides one panel from the next. Clear glass lets the lamp inside show through from every angle.

How It Works

One E27 lamp holder sits inside the lantern. A bulb is not supplied, so an LED lamp will need to be fitted before use. The fixture is wired to Class II standard, meaning it is double insulated and does not need an earth connection. Fit a dimmable E27 LED and Medstead will work with a dimmer switch; a standard bulb will not dim.

Where It Works Best

Its flush profile suits front doors, porches and any spot where a light needs to hug the wall rather than project out into a path or driveway. It carries an IP43 rating, so it is best suited to a sheltered position, such as under a porch canopy or in a recessed doorway, rather than a wall fully exposed to driving rain. For anyone who wants the same look with automatic operation instead of a manual switch, Elstead also makes this design with a built in PIR sensor.
