Mansion House takes its shape from the box lanterns that lit English porches and passageways long before electric light existed: a domed roof, a pierced frieze band, and four flat glass panels wrapped around the bulb. Cast in polished nickel rather than the range's original aged brass, it trades a warm glow for a brighter, more contemporary shine.

Underneath the finish, the frame is solid brass, the same material as the original Mansion House lantern, but plated here in a bright polished nickel rather than left in its natural tone. The dome and frieze are pierced with rows of round and marquise shaped cutouts, letting light escape upward and sideways as well as through the four glass panels below, and the nickel plating picks out every edge of that detailing with a crisp, silvery highlight.

How It Works

A single E27 bulb sits on a nickel plated lamp holder behind the glass, held in a frame that opens on a side hinge so the bulb can be changed from the front. Fit a dimmable bulb and the lantern will work with a dimmer switch; a straight, non dimmable bulb works just as well if you prefer a fixed level of light. The bulb itself isn't included, and some simple assembly is needed to complete the fitting before it goes up.

At just over 37cm tall, Mansion House is sized for either side of a front door, a porch wall, or a gate pillar, and its IP44 rating means it's built to cope with rain and damp outdoor air. The nickel finish reads cooler and slightly more modern than the aged brass version, so it tends to suit render, grey stone, or painted brick better than a period brick facade, and it pairs naturally with chrome or stainless door furniture nearby.
