One lantern, two ways to fit it

Kinsale earns its double barrelled name honestly. The same six sided head, with its bevelled glass panels and pointed finial, can be set on a short pedestal foot to flank a path or gate post, or mounted flush against a porch ceiling to hang straight down over a doorway. Which one you end up with comes down to how it is fitted rather than any difference in the lantern itself.

Finish and build

Finished in black, Kinsale is built from a polymer body with polycarbonate glazing rather than cast metal and real glass, so it copes with years of rain and salt air without the corrosion you would eventually see on a traditional cast fitting. The bevelled panels still catch the light the way old glass would, just without the upkeep.

How it works

A single E27 lamp holder sits inside, wired to Class II standard so no earth connection is needed, and it will dim if you fit a dimmable bulb. Fitted as a pedestal it stands on a stepped black foot plate at doorway height; fitted to a ceiling it hangs at the same scale, pointing straight down onto the step below.

Where it works best

Use the pedestal version to line a path, mark a gate post or sit either side of a porch step, and the ceiling version where you want that same look recessed into a covered porch instead. Either way it is rated for direct outdoor exposure, so it is built to shrug off wind and rain in a spot with no shelter.

Elstead Lighting

Kinsale comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose roots trace back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which is still led by the same Lucas family today. It's a design built for the practical end of their outdoor range, favouring materials that hold up outside over decorative flourish.

Questions People Ask

Can Kinsale be fitted as a wall light? No. It's designed to be fitted either on its pedestal foot for a path or gate post, or flush against a porch ceiling. It isn't supplied with a wall bracket.

Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E27 lamp, which isn't included, so you can choose a warm white or dimmable bulb to suit.

Will it cope in an exposed or coastal spot? Yes. The polymer body and polycarbonate glazing are IP44 rated and resist the corrosion a metal and glass lantern would suffer over time in salt air.

Do I need an earth wire to install it? No. Kinsale is Class II rated and double insulated, so no earth connection is needed.
