Elstead Franklin Single Desk Lamp - Tarpaulin Grey

The Franklin desk lamp takes its cue from old factory pendants, a deep dome shade set low on a slim chrome arm that sweeps up from a weighted base rather than hanging from a ceiling. It has the look of borrowed industrial kit, just resized for a tabletop.

A quiet, chalky grey

Elstead calls this shade colour Tarpaulin, a soft grey with a touch of warmth to it that sits more easily against most other colours than a flat black or white would. The shade is glossy on the outside and pale within, so when the lamp is lit the bulb glows low and visible rather than hidden away, and the polished chrome arm picks up whatever light is in the room.

How it works

The single bulb sits inside the dome and throws its light down and outward in a wide pool rather than up at the ceiling, which makes it more of a task light than a mood light on its own. Fit a dimmable bulb and you can pull the brightness back for evenings or push it up for reading and paperwork.

Where it works best

It stands about 46cm tall with a 36cm wide base and a 30cm shade, compact enough for a desk, a console table or a bedside surface without swamping it. The curved arm is well balanced, so it stays put rather than tipping forward, which makes it a natural fit for a study, home office or a bedroom with a bit of a retro streak.
