Elstead Franklin Single Desk Lamp - Oyster White

The Franklin borrows its look from old American diner pendants: a wide, deep dome shade curving down from a slim chrome arm that sweeps up from a matching oval base. In oyster white, it has the clean, faintly retro character of an old enamel shade without actually being one.

The dome shade and the base beneath it share the same oyster white finish, glossy rather than matte, while the curved arm connecting them is left in bright Polished Chrome. A vented collar at the top of the shade, also finished in oyster white, breaks up what would otherwise be a plain run of chrome down to the bulb.

How it works

A single E27 bulb sits inside the dome, angled down so the shade throws light onto the desk below rather than out into the room. Fit a dimmable bulb and it can be run anywhere from a soft background glow to a brighter light for reading or working. The bulb isn't included, so you can choose the exact brightness and colour temperature to suit the room.

Where it works best

At 46cm tall with a 30cm shade, the Franklin needs a reasonably solid desk or table to sit on, somewhere the dome can angle down over paperwork or a keyboard. Its retro shape also works well as an accent piece on a sideboard or shelf in a study or home office, even switched off. Elstead's Franklin range also includes matching diner style pendants with spun metal shades, so the same look can continue up onto the ceiling if you want to furnish the whole room to match.

Does the Franklin desk lamp come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 bulb, which isn't included, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature you want.

Is the Franklin desk lamp dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A non-dimmable bulb won't dim even on a dimmer circuit.
