A lantern with a bit of colour to it
Half wall lanterns tend to stick to black, white or a weathered bronze, so a Deco Lane finished in deep gloss red is a different proposition altogether. The shape underneath is properly traditional, a domed cap topped with a stepped finial, sitting over bevelled clear panels, but the red lacquer gives it a livelier, almost coach house feel that suits a painted door or a garden gate that likes to stand out.
The body is cast aluminium, and a mirrored backplate sits behind the bulb so the light gets thrown forward rather than lost against the wall. The panels themselves are clear polycarbonate rather than glass, bevelled at the edges to catch the light and more forgiving of the odd knock from a bin or a bike parked too close.
How it works
As a half lantern, the flat back sits close to the wall rather than projecting a full shape out from it, which helps in a narrow passage or tight to a doorway. It takes a single E27 lamp, is wired as a Class I fitting, and carries an IP44 rating, so it is built to sit out in the weather rather than needing a porch to shelter under.
Where it works best
It suits either side of a front door, along a boundary wall or fixed to a gatepost, where the colour reads well from the street. Because the IP44 rating covers proper exposure rather than just a splash, it also copes fine somewhere more open, like the corner of a garage or a side return.
