A compact light for a single picture
The small Chawton is scaled for one picture rather than a whole gallery wall, sized to sit above a single frame, a narrow mirror or a piece hung somewhere too tight for a longer bar. At 18.2cm wide it's the shortest fitting in the Chawton range, though it keeps the same angled shade profile as the larger sizes, just scaled down.
Matte black finish
Finished in a flat matte black, it has a graphic, almost architectural look against a pale wall, more like a piece of hardware than a decorative fitting. The finish is even and non reflective across the shade and the stepped backplate alike, so nothing catches the light and competes with whatever it's illuminating.
How It Works
Two arms carry the shade away from the wall plate, each with a knuckle joint that can be loosened, tilted and locked again. Because both joints move independently, you can correct for a frame hung slightly crooked or a wall that isn't quite flat, and angle the shade down onto the picture rather than out into the room. The shade sits around 18.6cm out from the backplate once fitted. It takes a single E14 bulb, which isn't included.
Where It Works Best
Because it's sized for one picture, the small Chawton suits spots where a larger picture light would overwhelm the wall: a single canvas in a hallway, one framed print above a home office desk, or a smaller piece in a living room or dining room where you don't want the light to dominate. It also works well for lighting one half of a pair of frames either side of a doorway, or tucking into a narrow gap between a window and a corner where a bigger fitting wouldn't fit.
Elstead and the wider Chawton range
Elstead Lighting is a British decorative lighting group and distributor with roots going back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and the business is still led by the same family today. This small Chawton sits alongside medium and large versions of the same design, and the range is also offered in dark bronze, polished nickel, polished brass and aged brass finishes, so a hallway or office with more than one frame to light can mix sizes or carry the same design across finishes to match existing hardware.

Questions People Ask
How far does the Chawton Small project from the wall? The shade sits around 18.6cm out from the backplate, enough clearance to light a single picture without the fitting touching the frame.
Can I angle the shade to suit my picture? Yes. Both arm joints loosen, tilt and lock independently, so you can angle the shade down onto a frame that's hung slightly crooked or a wall that isn't quite flat.
Does the Chawton Small come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E14 bulb, which isn't included, and it's dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb.
Is the small Chawton big enough for a large painting? At 18.2cm wide it's sized for one smaller picture or a narrow mirror rather than a large canvas. For bigger artwork, the medium and large Chawton picture lights in the same range offer a longer shade.
