Light aimed at the picture, not the room
A ceiling pendant or a run of downlights lights the whole wall evenly, which is exactly the wrong approach for a painting, a mirror or a framed map that deserves its own pool of light. The Chawton solves that with a narrow shade held on two adjustable arms, angled down at whatever is hanging beneath it. This medium version runs 40.2cm along the top of the frame, sized for a mid sized canvas or a small group of prints hung close together.
Polished nickel finish
Polished nickel gives the shade and wall plate a bright, cool silver tone with a mirror smooth surface, quite different from the warmer cast of brass or the softer texture of an aged finish. It reads well against silver or chrome picture frames, and suits a room where the other metalwork, door furniture, mirror frames, radiator covers, leans cool rather than warm.
How it works
Each arm meets the wall plate and the shade through its own knuckle joint, giving two points of adjustment rather than one continuous hinge. That lets you correct for a picture that is not perfectly centred under the fixing point, tilting the shade left or right as well as up and down. Two E14 lamp holders sit inside the shade; fit dimmable bulbs and the light works from a dimmer switch, though bulbs are not included.
Where it works best
Well suited to a hallway or stairwell where a picture is seen in passing rather than studied head on, and equally at home in a living room, dining room or study where one piece, a painting, an ornate mirror, a framed map, is worth lighting on its own rather than sharing a pendant with the rest of the room. It also works well over a desk or shelf in a home office, angled down onto a print or a certificate rather than lighting the whole wall.
