Elstead Chawton Medium Picture Light - Polished Nickel

A directional light built for artwork, not the room

Overhead lighting tends to flatten a painting or wash out a mirror rather than flatter it. The Chawton solves that with a narrow shade on two adjustable arms, aimed specifically at what's hanging beneath it rather than the room in general. This medium version measures 40.2cm across, suited to a mid size frame or several smaller pieces hung close together.

Polished nickel finish

The polished nickel finish has a cool, bright silver tone rather than the warmer cast of brass, with a mirror smooth surface across the shade and backplate. It sits well against silver frames, chrome hardware or a room built around cooler metal tones.

How it works

Each of the two arms carries a knuckle joint where it meets both the wall plate and the shade, so the angle can be set in two places rather than one. That gives a wider range of adjustment than a single hinge, useful if the picture below sits slightly off centre from the light's fixing point.

Where it works best

Well suited to hallways and stairwells where art is viewed in passing rather than head on, and to living rooms or studies where a specific piece, be it a painting, an ornate mirror or a framed map, deserves its own light rather than sharing a pendant or downlights with the rest of the room.
