A lantern for a pier or a low wall

The Canterbury pedestal doesn't hang or bolt flat to a wall, it stands on its own square post, built for gate piers, low garden walls and plinths either side of a driveway. A small pointed finial tops the peaked roof, marking an entrance rather than lighting a doorway the way a porch light would.

The whole fitting, post and lantern head together, is finished in black. Four glass panels are held in place by narrow glazing bars laid out in the same window pane pattern used across the rest of the Canterbury range, so the light breaks into a grid of small panes rather than one plain sheet of glass.

How It Works

One E27 lamp goes inside, and the fitting is dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb, so check compatibility with your dimmer switch before you buy one. A square plate at the base of the post is there for fixing the whole thing down to masonry, and as with any mains wired outdoor light, we recommend a qualified electrician handles the installation.

Where It Works Best

With an IP43 rating for outdoor use, the Canterbury pedestal is built to sit exposed on a gatepost, pier cap or boundary wall rather than under cover. It works well marking either side of a driveway entrance, along the top of a low wall, or on a plinth either side of a front path, giving a run of consistent points of light rather than one central fixture.

Elstead Lighting

Canterbury comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose history traces back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which is still led by the Lucas family today. The same black finish and glazing bar detailing runs through the wider Canterbury range, so this pedestal can be paired with the range's wall lanterns and chain hung lanterns for a matching look front and back of a house.

Does the Canterbury pedestal lantern need a post or pier to sit on? Yes. It stands on its own integral post and fixing plate rather than hanging from a wall, so it's designed to be bolted to a gate pier, a low wall or a plinth.

What bulb does it take and is one included? It takes a single E27 bulb. We recommend an E27 LED, and it isn't included, so you'll need to fit one before use.

Is the Canterbury pedestal lantern dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A non dimmable bulb won't respond to a dimmer switch even on a compatible circuit.
