A lantern that swings out from a scrolled wall bracket
The Canterbury Grande down light doesn't sit flat against the wall like a standard porch light. It hangs from a long, gently scrolled bracket that carries it forward and down, so the lantern box tilts to throw its light out and below rather than straight ahead. The scrollwork gives the whole fitting an old coach house character, the kind of detail you'd expect beside a period front door.
Black finish with leaded glazing bars
Both the bracket and the tapered lantern box are cast in a deep matte black, with fine glazing bars dividing the glass into small panes on every face. The glass itself has a lightly hammered texture, so the bulb reads as a soft glow through the panes rather than a single hard point of light.
How It Works
A single E27 lamp holder sits inside the lantern box. The bulb isn't included, so fit one before use, and choose an LED lamp for the lowest running cost. Pick a dimmable E27 bulb and the Canterbury will respond to a dimmer switch, though it's always worth checking your existing dimmer is compatible with the bulb you choose.
Where It Works Best
Rated IP43 for outdoor use, the Canterbury Grande suits porches, front doors and other sheltered entranceways where a fitting that projects from the wall reads better than one sitting flush against it. Because the bracket carries the lantern well clear of the wall, it also throws light further out across a step or path than a flush mounted alternative would.
Elstead Lighting
The Canterbury range comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group whose history traces back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led by the same Lucas family today. This Grande wall down version shares its black finish and leaded glass with the rest of the Canterbury range, including pedestal and chain hung lanterns, so a full exterior scheme is easy to put together in one style.
