This lamp is built around a tall porcelain vase, glazed in black and hand finished with gold birds perched among peonies and trailing branches, a chinoiserie pattern that gives the piece something to look at even before it's switched on.

Black, gold and cream together

The porcelain body sits on a dark wood plinth, topped with a cream pleated shade and a small aged brass finial at the crown. The warm cream keeps the black and gold base from tipping into anything too formal.

How it works

A single E27 lamp holder sits inside the neck of the vase, so light rises up through the shade rather than glaring at eye level. It suits staying lit through an evening, and takes a dimmable bulb if you want to bring the level down.

Where it works best

At 74cm tall this wants a console table, a wide bedside table or a sideboard rather than a small side table, somewhere the height and the painted pattern both have room to register in a living room, bedroom or dining room.
