An arm that carries the light off to one side

Rather than stacking a drum shade straight on top of a base, Balance holds its shade out on a horizontal bar, so the whole fitting reads more like a small piece of furniture than a standard lamp. Light lands just past the upright instead of directly beneath it, which changes how the lamp behaves on a table as much as how it looks.

White paintwork, polished nickel details

The stem, crossbar and round foot are painted a soft matte white, with polished nickel kept to the ends of the bar, the base collar and the fitting above the shade, so the metal reads as trim rather than the main event. The drum shade itself is fabric on the outside with a silver lining inside, which catches the bulb's light and throws it back out from underneath in a cool, bright wash rather than letting it disappear upward.

How it works

Balance is designed for a single E27 LED bulb, sitting inside the drum on a nickel fitting so the light source stays hidden from most angles while the silver lining does the work of spreading it around. Fit a dimmable bulb and the lamp will dim on a compatible circuit. The whole fitting is double insulated to Class II, so there's no earth connection to worry about, just a standard plug.

Where it works best

Because the shade sits off to one side of the upright rather than centred on it, Balance throws light where you actually need it, which makes it a genuinely useful reading lamp next to a chair or a bed rather than a purely decorative one. It also works well on a console table in a hallway or living room, anywhere a plain cylindrical lamp would feel a little flat.

Is the Balance table lamp dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 LED bulb. A non dimmable bulb will not dim even on a dimmer circuit.

Is a bulb included with this lamp? No. It takes one E27 LED bulb, which is not supplied, so you will need to fit one before use.

Why does the shade have a silver lining? The lining reflects light back out from underneath the drum, giving a brighter, cooler wash than a plain fabric interior would.
