A warm surprise under a quiet shade
Look at the Balance pendant from the side and it reads as a plain mocha brown drum on a slim rod, nothing more. Switch it on, though, and the trick shows itself: the underside of the shade is lined in gold, so the light spilling out from beneath is rich and amber rather than the flat white you'd get from an open bulb.
Brown, banded in brass
The fabric shade stays matte mocha brown all the way round, with a fine brass rim at the base where the gold lining catches the eye. That same brown continues down the suspension rod, interrupted only by small polished brass collars at the ceiling rose and at the top of the shade, so the brass reads as a detail rather than dominating the piece.
How it works
A single E27 lamp sits inside, and the fitting is dimmable if you choose dimmable bulbs. The drop rod adjusts from around 33cm to well over a metre, which gives you room to hang it low over furniture or keep it closer to the ceiling in a tighter space, and the frame itself is mild steel wired to Class I.
Where it hangs best
Centred above a dining table, it pools light where people are sitting while the rim glows gently above. It also works lowered over a console, hung to one side of a bed instead of table lamps, or used on its own to light a landing or the turn of a staircase.
The rest of the range
This brown and brass combination carries through to the Balance table lamp and wall light, so the finish can be picked up elsewhere in the same room. Elstead has been designing this kind of traditional and transitional lighting from its Hampshire base for decades.
