A reading lamp that grew tall

The Balance floor lamp takes the idea of a reading lamp and stretches it onto a full length pole, holding its drum shade off to one side on a horizontal arm rather than centred overhead like a standard uplighter. The result reads more like an oversized task lamp than a conventional floor lamp, putting a defined pool of light exactly where you need it.

White and Polished Nickel

The pole, arm and weighted base are finished in a soft white, with polished nickel kept to the bar ends and the short riser that holds the shade, so the silhouette reads as two clean materials rather than one block of colour. The drum shade itself is white fabric on the outside, lined inside with a mirrored silver finish that reflects the bulb's light back down through the open centre of the shade base.

How It Works

One E27 LED bulb sits on a polished nickel rod that drops from the horizontal arm into the middle of the shade. Light bounces around the mirrored interior and spills out through the open centre underneath, so it falls in a fairly contained circle rather than filling the whole room. Fit a dimmable bulb and the same lamp will run from a bright reading light down to a soft evening glow.

Where It Works Best

Because the shade sits out on its arm rather than directly above the base, Balance works best next to a chair, sofa or bed, where the shade can reach out over the seat while the pole and base stay tucked out of the way. Standing over 160cm tall, it suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways where a single, directional white floor lamp is more useful than an ambient one.

Does the Balance floor lamp come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 LED bulb, but the bulb itself is not supplied, so you can choose your own brightness and warmth.
