A lamp that leans rather than stands

Balance skips the usual upright column entirely. Its drum shade hangs from the far end of a long horizontal bar, so the whole fitting reads more like a small anglepoise than a traditional table lamp, with the light thrown out from a point well past the base.

The frame is finished in matte black, with polished nickel picking out the bar ends and the riser joint where the pole meets the base, giving the black steel some contrast rather than a single flat tone. The drum shade itself is white fabric on the outside, but lined inside with a silver mirrored fabric, so the light it throws reads brighter and cooler than a plain fabric shade would.

How it works

A single E27 lamp holder sits inside the shade, throwing light down and out to one side rather than in every direction. The head is fixed in place rather than rotating on the bar, so it's worth positioning the whole lamp with the shade already facing where you want the light before you plug it in.

Where it works best

Balance's long horizontal reach makes it useful beside a low sofa or armchair, where the shade can extend out past the base without the lamp itself needing to sit right at your elbow. It suits a living room or bedroom for reading light, and works equally well in a dining room or hallway wherever a single, sculptural light source is more useful than a pair.

Does the shade on Balance face a fixed direction? Yes. The head is fixed rather than rotating, so position the lamp with the shade already facing where you want the light before switching it on.

Is a bulb included with the Balance table lamp? No. It takes one E27 LED bulb, sold separately, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature that suits the room.

Can the Balance table lamp be used with a dimmer? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A bulb that isn't dimmable won't dim even on a dimmer switch circuit.

Why does this shade throw brighter light than a plain white shade? The inside of the drum shade is lined with a silver mirrored fabric rather than plain white, which reflects more of the light back out instead of absorbing it, giving a cooler, brighter glow than the fabric colour alone would suggest.
