A fluted glass shade with old fashioned charm

The Austen throws off the sharp edges of a modern downlight in favour of something softer: a trumpet shaped shade in ribbed glass, sitting on a polished chrome arm that curves out from a matching ribbed circular wall plate. It borrows the shape of a Victorian gas mantle and pairs it with a completely modern G9 fitting underneath, so it wears its period styling lightly rather than looking like a straight reproduction piece.

Finish

Polished chrome gives the arm, ball joint and ribbed wall plate a bright, mirror hard shine, which is exactly why it turns up in bathrooms with chrome taps, heated towel rails and mirrored cabinets rather than fighting them. The same fluted shade is also made on a polished nickel base, with a softer, slightly warmer shine, if chrome isn't the finish running through the rest of your fittings.

How it works

A single G9 bulb sits inside the flared glass shade, so instead of a hard beam it throws a soft wash up and out through the fluting, useful for general bathroom light without glare bouncing straight back off a mirror. Fit a dimmable G9 bulb and it will dim on a compatible circuit, though the bulb itself isn't included. This is a Class I fitting wired directly into the wall rather than plugged in, so we always recommend a qualified electrician installs it.

Where it works best

Fitted in a pair either side of a bathroom mirror is where the Austen does its best work, angled so light falls evenly across your face rather than straight down from overhead. A single fitting above a pedestal basin, or in a hallway or landing where you want something with a bit more character than a plain downlight, works just as well.
