A cool, understated line above the frame

Some picture lights want to be noticed. The Alton, in brushed nickel, is happy fading into the background: a slim tube on a curved arm that does its job quietly and lets the artwork underneath take the credit.

Satin silver, not stainless steel bright

Brushed nickel has a soft, slightly grey warmth to it rather than the icy shine of chrome, which keeps it from looking clinical against most wall colours. It sits comfortably alongside silver frames, pewter hardware or cooler grey and blue schemes.

How it works

An integrated LED strip runs the length of the bar and washes warm white light downward in a broad, even band. The arm articulates out from the wall plate and the head tilts on its own hinge, so the beam can be angled to actually land on the picture rather than the wall above it.

Where it works best

Framed art and photography are the obvious use, though a well placed Alton also does good work over a console table display, a bookcase, or a decorative mirror where a softer wash of light is welcome. This large size covers wider frames without leaving the outer edges dim.

Part of a wider range

Alton comes in two sizes and several finishes, brushed nickel being the coolest toned of them. It is made by Elstead, a long running British lighting company based in Alton, Hampshire, known for fittings that lean traditional and transitional rather than experimental.
