Warm metal, aimed exactly where you need it
Picture lights can look fussy, all curls and candle bulbs. The Alton goes the other way: a long, slim brushed brass tube on a simple curved arm, built to throw light onto a painting or photograph without becoming the main event on the wall itself.
Brushed, not polished
The brass here has a soft satin texture rather than a mirror shine, so it picks up warm highlights without turning into a spotlight of its own. It reads well against darker wall colours and picks out gold or wood tones in a frame nearby.
How it works
An integrated LED strip sits along the length of the bar, casting an even spread of warm white light down over the artwork below. The arm swings out from its round backplate and the bar itself tilts, so you can angle the light rather than settle for whatever position it happens to land in.
Where it works best
Obvious candidates are oil paintings, framed prints and photography, but it also earns its keep over a fireplace mantel, a run of shelving, or a large mirror in a hallway. This large version suits wider frames where the light needs to reach both edges evenly.
One of several finishes
Alton is offered in two sizes and a run of finishes, brushed brass being the warmest of the lot. Elstead, the company behind it, has been designing lighting from its base in Alton, Hampshire since 1971, still run by the same family that founded it.
