Picture lights can look fussy, all curls and candle bulbs. The Alton goes a different way: a long, slim bar on a single curved arm, built to wash light down over a painting or photograph without becoming the main event on the wall itself. This large version stretches the full 67.4cm, wide enough to light a big frame edge to edge.

Brushed brass finish

Underneath the finish, Alton is built in mild steel, then finished in a soft brushed brass rather than a mirror polish, so it picks up warm highlights without turning into a spotlight of its own. Against a darker wall colour it reads as a quiet line of warm metal, and it echoes gold or wood tones already sitting in a nearby frame.

How It Works

A 10W integrated LED bar runs the length of the fitting, giving an even 549 lumens of warm 3000K light rather than a series of hot spots from individual bulbs. The arm swings out from its round backplate and the bar itself tilts, so the beam can be angled down onto the artwork rather than left wherever it happens to land. Because the LED is built in rather than fitted as a separate lamp, there's no bulb to buy or change.

Where It Works Best

Oil paintings, framed prints and photography are the obvious candidates, but Alton also earns its keep over a fireplace mantel, a run of shelving, or a large mirror in a hallway. Being the large size in the range, it suits wider frames and bigger pieces where the light needs to reach both edges evenly, rather than pooling in the middle.

Elstead Lighting

Alton comes from Elstead Lighting, a British lighting group that traces its history back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and is still led by the same Lucas family today. It's part of a wider Alton range offered in more than one size and finish, so a matching pair or a run of frames can be lit with the same fitting throughout.

Questions People Ask

Is the Alton picture light dimmable? No. The integrated LED bar is not compatible with dimmer switches, so it runs at a single fixed brightness.

Can I replace the bulb if it stops working? There isn't a separate bulb to replace. The LED is built into the bar itself rather than fitted as a lamp holder.

Can I angle the light once it's fitted? Yes. The arm swings out from the backplate and the bar tilts independently, so you can aim the light down onto the frame rather than straight out from the wall.

Does this need an electrician to install? Yes. Alton is a hardwired Class I fitting, so we recommend a qualified electrician carries out the installation.
