A Brass Step Light That Aims Its Light On Purpose

Most step lights just glow. The Collingwood WL342 does something more deliberate. Behind its square antique brass faceplate sits an asymmetric lens that splits the beam, sending part of it straight down onto the tread below and part of it out across the surface in front, so a run of steps gets lit evenly instead of picking up one bright pool per fitting. It sits flush into a wall or step riser, so by day you see a neat brass square, and at night you get a low level wash of light rather than a visible bulb.

Antique Brass, Built To Weather Outdoors

This version comes in antique brass, a warm, slightly aged toned metal that reads well against natural stone, brick, render and timber decking, all common backdrops for outdoor steps. The lens itself is 5mm toughened glass, chosen because it has to survive knocks from feet, tools and garden furniture as well as constant exposure to rain and salt air near the coast. The square shape and neat mitred edge keep the fitting looking intentional rather than bolted on, which matters on a front step or a garden wall where it sits at eye level for anyone walking past.

How It Works

Each WL342 uses a 2.6W integral LED, available in 2700K extra warm white or 3000K warm white, run at an 80 CRI so brickwork and stone read in their true colour rather than washed out. It wires straight to the mains, so there is no separate driver to house or hide, and the wiring is arranged in parallel, meaning several fittings along a run of steps can be connected back to one supply rather than each needing its own feed. It comes with an installation tube for setting the body into loose soil, or for lining the edge when it is being built into a cut stone or masonry opening, plus a metre of rubberised H05RN-F outdoor cable to make the final connection. It is IP65 rated, so it is built to stay outside permanently in all weather, and it is also rated suitable for bathroom zone 2, so it can go in a shower room or bathroom as well as in the garden. Where It Works Best

This is a step and walkway light first. It earns its keep along a run of garden steps, a raised patio edge, a driveway retaining wall or the side of a porch, anywhere a change of level needs marking at night without floodlighting the whole area. Because the beam splits down and across, it also works set into a low garden wall to wash light along a path, or beside an entrance to pick out the ground in front of a door. Being IP65 rated and bathroom zone 2 rated, the same fitting can double up indoors around a walk in shower or bath surround where a discreet, low level light is wanted rather than an overhead one.
