The Frame That Puts A Panel On The Ceiling, Not In It
Plenty of ceilings have no suspended grid to drop a panel into, and plenty more have no void to recess one. The Collingwood P2SMA solves both. It is a shallow square frame that fixes flat to the ceiling and holds a Solis 600 x 600 LED panel on the surface, giving you a neat finished border instead of a bare panel and visible cable. If you have been hunting for a surface mount kit for a 600 x 600 LED panel, this is the part that does it.
White Painted Aluminium, 70mm Deep
The frame is aluminium with a white painted finish, which Collingwood lists as matt white. It is smooth and flat rather than glossy, so it disappears against a painted white ceiling and reads as a slim raised border around the lit face of the panel. It measures 600mm square with a 70mm depth and weighs 1.3kg, light enough to hold up single handed while you mark your fixing points. It is dimensioned for the 600 x 600 Solis panel in particular, so the panel seats square in the aperture with no packing out or trimming.
How It Works
The frame goes up first. Screw it to the ceiling through its fixing points, bring the panel's supply cable through, then slide the LED panel into the frame from below. Side screws in the frame sides clamp the panel in place and finish the job. There is nothing to wire into the frame itself and no separate bracketry to work out. What you get is the aluminium frame and its side screws. The Solis LED panel and its driver are bought separately, so match the kit to a 600 x 600 panel rather than one of the rectangular sizes.
Where It Works Best
This is the accessory for a solid ceiling. Think plastered ceilings in an office refit, a concrete soffit in a basement or car park, a classroom or corridor where the tiles were taken out, or a garage, utility room or home office where nobody is going to install a grid for the sake of one light. It also earns its place where a recess is technically impossible, such as a shallow void, a ceiling packed with insulation, or joists sitting exactly where the cut out would need to go. Once it is up, the panel can be dropped out and refitted later without touching the ceiling again, which is useful in rented or serviced spaces.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and builds its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED technology and nothing else since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. Its sustainability record has been graded too: an EcoVadis Gold medal puts it in the top 5% of all companies assessed worldwide. Accessories like this frame are a small but telling part of the range, the sort of thing a manufacturer only bothers with when it expects its panels to be fitted in real buildings with awkward ceilings.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 5 year warranty, which Collingwood publishes as its extended 5 year term.
- Aluminium construction with a white painted finish, 600mm x 600mm x 70mm, 1.3kg.
- This is a mechanical mounting frame. It carries no wiring, no driver and no electrical connection of its own, so it adds nothing to the load and does not alter the panel's electrical class.
- Collingwood does not publish an IP rating for this kit, so treat it as an indoor accessory for dry locations only.
- Dimming behaviour is set entirely by the LED panel and its driver. The frame has no effect on it either way.
- Sized for 600mm x 600mm panels only. Rectangular Solis panels need their own surface mount kit.
- Care is simple. Wipe the frame with a soft dry cloth. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which will mark the painted finish.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What size LED panel does the Collingwood P2SMA surface mount kit fit?
The Collingwood P2SMA surface mount kit is made for 600mm x 600mm LED panels from the Collingwood Solis range. The frame itself measures 600mm x 600mm x 70mm.
Can a 600 x 600 LED panel be fitted without a suspended ceiling grid?
Yes. A surface mount kit such as the Collingwood P2SMA screws directly to a solid ceiling and holds the panel in place, so a 600 x 600 LED panel can be installed where there is no suspended grid and no recess.
Does the Collingwood P2SMA include the LED panel?
No. The Collingwood P2SMA is the surface mounting frame and its side screws. The Solis 600 x 600 LED panel and its driver are separate items.
How is the Collingwood P2SMA installed?
The aluminium frame is screwed to the ceiling first, the LED panel is then slid into the frame from below, and side screws in the frame clamp the panel in position.
How far below the ceiling does a panel sit in the P2SMA kit?
The Collingwood P2SMA frame is 70mm deep, so a Solis 600 x 600 panel mounted in it projects roughly 70mm below the ceiling line.
