A solder free way to get power onto 12mm LED strip

Joining LED strip to its driver is the fiddly bit of any tape lighting job. This Collingwood connector, code LSK2212SD, takes the soldering iron out of it. One end clamps straight onto the copper pads of 12mm strip. The other end is a twin core flying lead that runs back to the driver. No heat, no flux, no twisted joints hidden behind a plasterboard reveal.

The strip to driver version of the LSK range

Collingwood makes the LSK connectors in several jobs, including strip to strip, flex bend and L bend. This is the strip to driver one, sized for 12mm wide tape. It is the piece you reach for at the very start of a run, where the tape needs feeding rather than extending or turning a corner. The body is moulded in polycarbonate with copper contacts inside, and the housing is a plain low profile clip rather than anything decorative, because the whole point is that it disappears once the run is fitted. The flying lead is a two core cable, red and black, with tinned bare ends ready to land in a driver terminal.

How It Works

The clip has a hinged lid. Lift it, slide the cut end of the strip in so the two solder pads sit under the sprung copper contacts, then press the lid shut. The contacts bite onto the pads and hold the strip in place. Polarity matters, so match the red core to the positive pad and the black core to the negative one before you close it. From there the two bare tails go into the DC output terminals of the driver. You get one connector with its lead attached. The strip, the driver and any profile are all bought separately.

Where It Works Best

This is the feed point for a Collingwood LSC04, LSC05 or LSC06 run. In practice that means the head end of a kitchen plinth or under cabinet run, a shelf, a stair nosing, a cove detail or a wardrobe interior, wherever the tape has to pick up 24V from a driver tucked in a cupboard, a void or a service riser. Because the connector body is slim it will sit inside most aluminium strip profiles, so the join can stay in the channel with the diffuser over it instead of dangling outside the housing. It is also handy on site when a run has been cut to length and the factory tail is no longer on the piece you actually need.
