The Collingwood SL220 is a compact LED spike light that pushes straight into a lawn, a border or a gravel bed and throws light back up at whatever you aim it at. What separates this version from the rest of the SL220 family is the body. It is made from 316 marine grade stainless steel, the same specification used for coastal handrails and boat fittings, so salt air and wind driven rain do not attack it the way they can with softer finishes. It draws 5.7W and gives out between 515 and 538 lumens depending on the colour temperature you choose, which is a genuinely useful amount of light from a fitting small enough to hide behind a shrub.

The stainless steel finish

The barrel and spike are finished in a soft brushed satin rather than a mirror polish, so the metal reads as a quiet pewter grey instead of a bright flash of chrome. It sits comfortably against Portland stone, weathered timber decking, smooth render and clipped hedging. Left outdoors, 316 stainless tends to dull gently rather than pit or streak, which is why it is the grade specified for seafront gardens, estuary terraces and exposed hilltop plots. Collingwood does offer the SL220 in anodised aluminium and in bronze, but stainless steel is the one to reach for when the site itself is the problem.

How It Works

This is the straight to mains version, so the driver sits inside the fitting and it wires directly to a 230V supply. There is no separate transformer to find room for and no low voltage cable run to calculate. A 3m flying lead comes out of the base of the spike ready to be taken back to a junction box, and the wiring is parallel, so a run of fittings can be teed off one feed. The head tilts through 90 degrees, from pointing straight up to pointing horizontally, so you can plant the spike first and aim it afterwards. Overall it measures 62.5mm across the head and 440mm from the tip of the spike to the top of the barrel, with 240mm of that being the ground spike. Two optics are offered, a narrow 12 degree for picking out a single trunk or a statue, and a wide 40 degree for washing a hedge, a wall or a broad canopy.

Where It Works Best

Uplighting is the obvious job. Set one at the foot of a birch or an olive and the 12 degree optic will carry light up the trunk and into the branches. Use the 40 degree version along a border to graze a rendered garden wall, light a run of topiary, or bring a pergola back into view after dark. Because the spike simply pushes into soft ground, it also suits beds that get replanted seasonally, since the fitting can be lifted and repositioned without any building work. Coastal gardens, estuary plots and windy rural sites are where the 316 stainless really earns its keep. Add the GH220 Glare Guard Hood or the GS220 Glare Guard Snoot if the fitting will be seen from a seating area or an upstairs window, and use the JB5 gel filled junction box to keep connections dry below ground.
