The SL220 is Collingwood's compact spike spotlight, and this is the copper version built to run on mains voltage. Everything it needs is sealed inside the head, so there is no separate driver or transformer to find a home for in a border or a shed. It draws 5.7W and gives 515 lumens at 2700K, which works out at just over 90 lumens per watt. That is a warm, low glare light rather than the cold blue white a lot of outdoor spots throw out.

Solid copper that will change over time

Copper is the finish people pick when they want the fitting to settle into a garden rather than announce itself. New out of the box it has a bright pinkish warmth, with a fine brushed grain running round the cylinder and a machined bezel ring holding the lens. Leave it outside and it will slowly darken through deeper browns and eventually towards a soft green. That patina is expected with copper and it is usually the reason people choose it. It reads particularly well against red brick, sandstone, timber decking and mature planting, and it ages into the garden in a way stainless steel never quite does.

How It Works

The LED, the optic and the control gear are integrated into the sealed head, so there is nothing to lamp and nothing to service. The head tilts through a full 90 degrees, which means you can point it straight up the trunk of a tree or drop it right down to horizontal to graze along a wall. Beam angle is set at manufacture rather than adjustable on site, so you choose it when you order, a narrow 12 degree beam for picking out one subject cleanly, or a wide 40 degree beam for a broader wash. A 3m flying lead comes out of the base of the spike, and Collingwood lists its JB5 gel filled connector as the usual way to join that lead to a buried supply. This is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earth connection.

Where It Works Best

This is a border and planting light first and foremost. Push the 440mm spike into soft ground and use the narrow beam to uplight a specimen tree, a topiary, a statue or a slim architectural conifer. The wide beam suits shrub groups, hedging, low retaining walls and gravel beds where you want light to spread rather than spear. It is a common choice for lighting a garden feature that gets viewed from the house at night, and because the whole fitting can be repositioned by hand, it works well in planting that is still filling out and will be moved around over a season or two. Running straight off the mains also means there is no transformer to site, which suits gardens where a supply is already run out to a fused spur.

Does the Collingwood SL220 copper spike light need a separate driver or transformer?
No. The Straight to Mains version of the Collingwood SL220 has its control gear built into the head and connects directly to a mains supply, so no external LED driver or low voltage transformer is needed.

What beam angles does the SL220 come in, and can they be changed later?
