What It Is
This is the self test emergency plug in kit Collingwood builds for its Caiman CSP anti corrosive batten range. Fit it inside a standard Caiman CSP fitting and that fitting can check its own emergency light and battery, so nobody has to climb up with a torch to find out whether it still works. Anyone searching for a self test emergency kit for a Collingwood batten, or a plug in emergency conversion for Caiman CSP, is looking for exactly this part.
The Self Test Version
Collingwood offers three ways to add emergency function to a Caiman CSP batten: manual test, DALI 2 test, and this one, self test. This kit is the version that tests itself in the background rather than waiting for someone to press a button or switch off the mains. Inside the case is a lithium iron phosphate battery pack, sealed into a moulded white converter housing with a set of colour coded flying leads and a screw terminal block for connection. It is built to sit inside the batten body, out of sight, so nothing about the fitting's appearance changes once it is installed.
How It Works
Once wired in, the kit runs its own periodic checks on the battery and the light output rather than relying on a manual inspection. A status LED on the unit reports the result, changing colour or starting to blink if something needs attention, so a fault shows up on its own instead of waiting for the next scheduled test. It connects using a quick release, moveable terminal block that lines up with the removable connector already built into the Caiman CSP body, and the installation points on the fitting are clearly marked to help with accurate pre drilling. There is no separate cable run to add. A BESA mounting bracket, sold separately as ACBESA, is available if the fitting needs to go onto a BESA box rather than its standard bracket.
Where It Works Best
This kit is made for the Caiman CSP anti corrosive range specifically, the 2ft to 6ft battens Collingwood builds with a sealed polycarbonate body rated IP66 and IK10 for wash down areas, cold stores, agricultural buildings, plant rooms and other demanding industrial spaces. It is not compatible with the Caiman Quick Connect or Borealis Versa fittings, so it should only be ordered alongside a Caiman CSP batten. In practice it belongs anywhere a facilities team needs emergency lighting compliance without sending someone round with a test key on a schedule, corridors, stairwells and escape routes through washdown or cold store areas being the obvious examples.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has been developing LED technology since 2002. Collingwood says it was among the first manufacturers to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life, and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. Good to Know
- Carries a 5 year warranty on the kit.
- Uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, a chemistry Collingwood says holds its charge and cycles for longer than older battery types used in emergency lighting.
- Fits the Caiman CSP anti corrosive batten range only, from 2ft to 6ft. It is not designed for Caiman Quick Connect or Borealis Versa fittings.
- The battery pack is sealed. Its own label warns against disassembling, puncturing, crushing, heating or burning it.
- A BESA mounting bracket (ACBESA) is sold separately for BESA box installations.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
- What does the self test function actually check? It runs its own periodic checks on the battery and the emergency light output, then reports the result through a status LED that changes colour or blinks if a fault is found, instead of relying on someone carrying out a manual test.
- Which Collingwood fittings does this kit fit? It is built for the Caiman CSP anti corrosive batten range, from 2ft to 6ft, and it is not compatible with the Caiman Quick Connect or Borealis Versa fittings.
- Does fitting this kit mean running extra cable? No. It connects through the quick release terminal block already built into the Caiman CSP fitting, so there is no separate wiring run to add.
- What battery does the kit use? A lithium iron phosphate battery pack, sealed inside the converter housing and rated by Collingwood for a five year warranty.
- Do I need a separate bracket to fit it to a BESA box? Yes, the ACBESA BESA mounting bracket is sold separately if the batten is going onto a BESA box rather than its standard bracket.
