Once a presence detector is bolted onto a luminaire six metres up, changing its settings becomes a job involving a ladder. The Collingwood PIRBOLTDIMR exists to stop that happening. It is the handheld remote for the PIRBOLTDIM step dimming PIR sensor, and it lets you set detection sensitivity, daylight threshold, hold time and standby behaviour while standing on the floor. Point, press, done.

What makes it worth having is the depth of control packed onto one small keypad. This is not an on and off wand. It is a proper commissioning tool that turns a fixed sensor into something you can tune to the space it is actually working in.

The remote is moulded in white plastic with a slim, flat profile and gently rounded corners, so it slips into a pocket or a toolbox tray without catching. The face is divided into soft grey panels, each grouping one function together, with the key legends printed in blue and the ON key picked out as a solid blue circle. Every button is labelled in plain language, so you are not decoding symbols on site.

How It Works

The keypad sends its instructions to the PIRBOLTDIM sensor, which then holds those settings. Along the top row sit ON, OFF, AUTO and RESET, so you can force the light on, force it off, hand control back to the sensor, or wipe your changes and start again.

Below that, the panels cover the settings that actually matter in commissioning. Detection range can be dialled to 100, 75 or 50 percent to stop the sensor picking up movement you do not care about. The daylight sensor can be set to trigger at 10, 50, 150 or 2000 lux, so the fitting stays off while there is enough natural light. Hold time runs from 10 seconds up through 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 minutes. Standby period offers 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes plus a continuous option, and standby dimming level can be set to off, 10, 20 or 30 percent. There is also a TEST key for walk testing the detection pattern and a lock key to protect the settings once you are happy with them, plus up and down arrows for fine adjustment.

Power comes from a single CR2025 coin cell. Collingwood does not supply the battery with the remote, so it is worth dropping one in the toolbox before you head to site. No wiring, no driver, no commissioning software.

Where It Works Best

This remote earns its keep anywhere a PIRBOLTDIM has been fitted at height. Collingwood rates the Salvus PIR bolt on sensor for mounting between 2.5 and 6.0 metres, and the higher up that bracket you go, the more useful it becomes to change a hold time without fetching access equipment.

Typical settings are warehouses, workshops, loading bays, plant rooms, stairwells, corridors and car parks, wherever a linear batten or bulkhead is running on presence detection. Collingwood lists the sensor as compatible with its Borealis, Caiman Anti Corrosive and Lentus luminaires, so if the site is running any of those on step dimming, this is the tool that configures them.

It is equally at home in the hands of a facilities team after handover. Occupancy patterns change, a corridor gets busier, a standby level turns out to be too dim for comfort. One person with this remote can walk the building and retune it in an afternoon.
