A 700mA constant current driver that speaks DALI
The Collingwood PSDAL700M is the power supply sitting behind a 700mA LED installation rather than a light in its own right. It takes an ordinary 110 to 240V mains feed and turns it into a steady 700mA constant current output between 2 and 71V DC, which is exactly what Collingwood's 700mA fittings ask for. What separates it from a plain 700mA driver is the control side. It is addressable on DALI, it also accepts a 1 to 10V signal, and it will take a simple push to make switch if the job runs no control system at all. One driver, three ways to dim it.
The white polycarbonate casing
The body is white polycarbonate rated UL94-V0, the flame retardant grade you want on a component that will sit inside a ceiling void or a cabinet for years. It is a slim flat brick, 123mm long by 79mm wide and only 22mm deep, weighing around 0.1kg. A moulded tab at one corner lets it be screwed down rather than left loose in the void, and the full terminal legend is printed across the top face so the electrician can wire it without hunting for a leaflet. Nothing about it is decorative, and nothing needs to be, because it lives out of sight.
How It Works
Mains live, neutral and earth go into the primary side, then the secondary pair runs out to the fitting or the string of fittings. Because it is a constant current driver it holds 700mA steady and lets the output voltage float wherever the load needs it inside the 2 to 71V window, so the number of fittings you can hang off it depends on their combined forward voltage rather than a simple sum of watts. Collingwood rates it for 1 to 18 LEDs of 3W at 700mA, and up to 56W maximum input. On the control side, DALI addressing lets a building system talk to this driver individually. Where several drivers need to move as one, they can be synchronised in groups of up to ten, and a 1 metre sync cable is supplied in the box for exactly that. Efficiency is quoted at over 90%.
Where It Works Best
This is a component, so the useful question is where it gets mounted rather than which room it decorates. It belongs in a dry, ventilated spot as close to the fittings as the wiring allows: a ceiling void above a plasterboard grid, a service cupboard, a loft, the top of a run of kitchen cabinets, or a plant space feeding a group of downlights. The IP20 rating means it must never go outdoors or anywhere it can be splashed, so if the fittings themselves are outside then the driver stays inside the building and only the low voltage tails cross over. It is an obvious pick on a commercial or high specification residential job where the lighting sits on a DALI network, and it is just as happy on a domestic install where a 1 to 10V signal or a retractive switch is doing the dimming.
