A Simple Way to Add Dimming Sense to the Caiman CSP
This small plug-in unit turns a standard Caiman CSP fitting into a sensor controlled one. Instead of just switching on and off, the fitting can dim up when it detects movement below it and settle back down to a lower background level once the area is empty again.
The Sensor Unit
It is a compact white module, not much bigger than a matchbox, with a small raised dome on one end that houses the microwave detector. A printed label on the side carries its output rating and CE marking. It plugs straight into the matching socket inside the Caiman CSP body, so there is no separate enclosure or cable run to plan for.
How It Works
- Uses microwave detection rather than passive infrared, so it can sense movement through some materials and at a wider angle than a standard PIR sensor.
- Dims the fitting up to full output when movement is detected nearby.
- Dims back down to a preset background level once the area has been quiet for a while, rather than switching off completely.
- Connects with a direct plug fit inside the Caiman CSP housing. No additional wiring or a separate control box is needed.
- Outputs a 0 to 10V dimming signal to drive the fitting's own driver.
Where It Works Best
This kit is built for spaces where you want some light on at all times for safety, but not necessarily at full output when nobody is around. Corridors, stairwells, plant rooms and warehouse aisles are the obvious fit. Keeping a background level lit means people never walk into darkness, while the brighter response when someone approaches means the space isn't run at full power around the clock.
Because it only fits inside the Caiman CSP body, it is not a general purpose sensor kit. It is meant to be specified alongside that fitting from the start, or added to one already installed.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has focused specifically on LED technology since 2002. The brand says it was among the first to bring mains dimmable LED products into the UK electrical wholesale market, which is the same dimming know how behind kits like this one. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 5 year warranty from Collingwood.
- Designed specifically for the Caiman CSP range. It is not a universal sensor and will not fit other Collingwood luminaires.
- Plugs directly into the fitting, so there's no extra control unit to mount separately.
- As this kit connects inside a mains wired luminaire, Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Will this fit any Collingwood fitting?
No. It is designed specifically for the Caiman CSP and is not compatible with other Collingwood ranges.
Does the light turn off completely when the area is empty?
No. It dims down to a lower background level rather than switching off, so the space is never left completely dark.
Do I need to run any extra cables to fit it?
No. The sensor plugs directly into a socket inside the Caiman CSP housing, so no separate wiring or control box is required.
What kind of sensor does it use?
It uses microwave detection rather than a passive infrared sensor, which allows it to pick up movement across a wider angle.
