Keep the lights on when the power isn't
The LEDEP10 is an emergency converter built for Collingwood's compatible mains downlights and panels. Fit it alongside the main fitting and it gives that light a second job, standing in as emergency lighting the moment mains power fails.
The self test version
This is the self test model, which means it checks itself on a regular cycle without anyone needing to press a button. A status LED shows how the unit is doing, and there is also a manual test point built in for anyone who wants to run a check by hand. The whole unit is housed in a polycarbonate case and rated IP20, so it is meant for dry spaces such as ceiling voids rather than anywhere exposed to moisture.
How It Works
- Connects between the mains supply and a compatible Collingwood downlight or panel.
- Under normal conditions it simply passes mains power through and keeps its internal battery charged.
- If the mains supply is cut, it switches the connected fitting to battery power automatically.
- Being the self test version, it runs its own test cycle on a schedule and reports the result through the status LED, with a manual test point available too.
Where It Works Best
This converter earns its keep on sites where emergency lighting has to be tested regularly but walking round pressing buttons on every fitting isn't realistic. Think offices, retail units, schools, and blocks of flats, anywhere with corridors, stairwells, or communal areas that fall under fire safety rules. Because the self test happens on its own, it takes the pressure off facilities teams who would otherwise have to log manual tests across dozens of fittings by hand.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002, which shows in the detail that goes into components like this one. The company says it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life, and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, putting it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Comes with a 5 year warranty.
- Rated IP20, so it needs to go somewhere dry, such as a ceiling void, rather than anywhere exposed to damp.
- Polycarbonate casing, Class II electrical rating.
- Compact at 200mm by 55mm by 25mm and weighs 0.4kg, so it should fit most standard ceiling voids.
- Needs an 18mm cutout for the status LED and a 7mm cutout for the test button if you want both accessible from below.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does self test mean on this unit?
It means the converter runs its own test cycle automatically on a set schedule, rather than needing someone to press a test button at regular intervals.
Can I still test it manually?
Yes. Alongside the automatic self test cycle there is a manual test point, which needs a 7mm cutout to access.
Where should this be installed?
It is rated IP20, so it needs to be fitted somewhere dry, such as a ceiling void, and not anywhere it could be exposed to moisture.
Does this need a qualified electrician?
Yes. Emergency lighting circuits should always be installed and signed off by a qualified electrician, and Moonlight Design recommends using a registered NICEIC electrician.
